How to prepare my car for shipping cross country

Preparing your car for cross-country shipping involves several essential steps to ensure a smooth and secure transportation process. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to prepare your car;

1.  Clean the Vehicle:   Wash your car thoroughly, both inside and out, before shipping. Cleaning the exterior allows for a better inspection of the vehicle’s condition, and cleaning the interior ensures that no personal belongings are left behind.

2.  Document Existing Condition:   Document the current condition of your vehicle by taking detailed photos or videos from different angles. This will serve as evidence if any damage occurs during transit.

3.  Remove Personal Belongings:   Clear out all personal items from your car. This includes items in the glove compartment, trunk, and any storage compartments. Auto transport companies typically do not allow personal belongings in the vehicle during transit for safety and insurance reasons.

4.  Check for Leaks and Mechanical Issues:   Before shipping, check your car for any leaks or mechanical issues. Address any leaks, and ensure that your vehicle is in good working condition. If you notice any problems, it’s advisable to have them fixed before shipping.

5.  Disable Alarm Systems:   If your vehicle has an alarm system or any anti-theft devices, disable them or provide clear instructions to the auto transport company on how to deactivate them if needed.

6.  Secure Loose Parts:   Ensure that any loose parts, such as antennas or removable spoilers, are secured or removed to prevent damage during transit. Fold in the side-view mirrors and retract any antennas if possible.

7.  Check Tire Pressure and Battery:   Ensure that your tires are properly inflated and the battery is fully charged. This will help prevent any issues during loading and unloading processes and ensure that your vehicle is ready to be driven upon delivery.

8.  Fuel Level:   Keep the fuel level in your vehicle to no more than a quarter tank. A lower fuel level reduces the overall weight of the vehicle and is safer during transport.

9.  Consider Special Instructions:   If your vehicle has specific instructions for handling, such as a convertible top that needs to be secured or a delicate paint finish, inform the auto transport company in advance. Provide them with any relevant instructions or special considerations to ensure proper handling.

10.  Disable Toll Tags or Parking Passes:   Remove any toll tags or parking passes from your vehicle to avoid unnecessary charges during transit.

11.  Secure the Vehicle:   Ensure that all windows and doors are closed and securely locked before handing over your vehicle to the auto transport company.

12.  Provide Copies of Keys:   Provide the auto transport company with copies of your car keys, including any remote keys or alarm system fobs. Keep a spare set of keys for yourself as a backup.

By following these steps, you can properly prepare your car for cross-country shipping. Remember to communicate any specific requirements or concerns to the auto transport company to ensure a successful and hassle-free transportation process.
